ROCs

Renewable Obligation
Certificates

Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) are proof that electricity has been generated from renewable sources. Energy suppliers are required to collect these certificates to meet government targets, and failure to do so results in penalties.

This system drives renewable energy production and helps reduce carbon emissions.

Why ROCs Matter

The Renewables Obligation (RO) has been a cornerstone of UK renewable energy policy since 2002. It places an obligation on licensed electricity suppliers to source an increasing proportion of electricity from renewable sources.

ROCs represent this renewable generation and can be traded between parties, creating a market-based mechanism that incentivizes investment in renewable energy projects across the UK.

Although closed to new generating capacity since 2017, the existing ROC scheme continues to support generators until their support periods end, maintaining significant trading activity in the market.
